The Northern Forts are a part of Liepāja’s fortress. The fortress was built at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century to provide the protection of Liepāja’s naval base in case of enemy attack. The line of the outer fortification system surrounded the whole city.
Today, you can cautiously walk through the ruins and watch buildings, pillboxes and concrete staircases slowly recede into the sea. And there is lonely wind turbine standing at that place.
When visiting Liepaja city in Latvia, definitely go to the Northern Forts. At 5 AM in the morning the view there is indescribable! Certainly one of the most beautiful mornings, I have ever shoot!
