As a first drone to learn how to fly, the Holy Stone HS700E is a decent aircraft to get started with.
The starting price is low compared to many other drones capable of long-range flights, but this one cannot fly too far.
What are long-range drones, and how far can they fly?
Every drone has a rated transmission range to acquire video and RC signals at a specific distance from the pilot.
The drone’s transmission range does not mean it can fly that far. Instead, it’s the maximum distance it can obtain a video or radio link.
Generally, drones have a limited battery life, which is the main contributing factor to how far long-range drones can fly.
In very rare circumstances, the battery life can carry a drone beyond its maximum transmission range.
Because we need to return the drone back home, we cut the flight distance in half at most, unless there is someone afar, miles away, that can retrieve the drone at a specific and planned landing point to fly it as far as possible.
One of the best ready-to-fly drones is the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, which is able to fly up to 9.3 miles or 15 kilometers.
At least, this is the transmission range, but in reality, the maximum flight distance is shorter.
Each individual long-range drone has a unique battery life, weight, motor speed and thrust, aerodynamics, and internal parts that contribute to the drone’s flight distance.
Some RC planes and very special FPV drones can fly beyond a regular drone’s maximum transmission range.
What is the video transmission module in a drone, and why is it essential for long-range drones?
The video transmission module, for instance, the DJI O2 or DJI O3 Air module, is responsible for transmitting the image back to FPV goggles or to the remote controller of a GPS drone and receiving command inputs from the controller.
Together with installed antennas on the drone and the remote controller, the air unit is the main factor contributing to a drone’s transmission range.
With standard DJI drones, we have three main video transmission modules: O2, O3, and O3+ being the newest one, but present only in a handful of professional drones.
There are also older transmission modules, but those don’t have a very long transmission range.
What do we need to consider when looking for a long-range drone?
- Transmission module: As mentioned, this is the main factor when shopping for long-range drones.
- Battery life: To fly long-range, we need the drone to stay in the air as long as possible. Nowadays, most drones are capable of flying for more than half an hour, but this is yet another important factor.
- Motor power: How fast the drone can fly and the speeds it can reach also contribute to how far away you can get with your drone and take the shots you need before the battery is depleted.
- Wind resistance: A drone’s wind resistance is capable of keeping the drone in the air with high winds.
- Drone aerodynamics: This is yet another important factor that can indirectly contribute to how far a drone can fly. Let’s take the DJI FPV’s aerodynamics, for instance. It can reach super high speeds and resist high winds.
- Country of flight: This is yet another critical factor. For instance, the FAA in the US allows a maximum transmission range that’s rather high, whereas in the EU, China, Japan, and a few more countries, the maximum transmission distance is more strict.
There are countries worldwide (mostly undeveloped countries) with no limit on the maximum transmission distance.
Many drones will have limits in place.- DJI will limit the VTX power output in the EU to 25mW, which is extremely low when thinking about long-range drones.
- Some drone transmission power is capable of even 1W, 40 times higher than the limits in the EU.
- If, for some reason, these regulations get in the way of you achieving something and you have the legal requirements to fly a drone beyond these ranges, you can either look for alternatives on how to increase the VTX power of DJI drones or invest in custom FPV drones or RC planes to reach the maximum range possible.
Alongside the above factors, there are other characteristics to consider when looking for a long-range drone, such as the remote controller, how many antennas the drone has, firmware capabilities, radio signal for separate radio modules, and active interference.
